Beauty products with outstanding performance
Leaping Bunny Certification
Ethically sourced sustainable ingredients
Product safety, low environmental impact

When it comes to your skincare and cosmetics, what is important to you? Performance? Sustainability of ingredients? Ethical sourcing? Environmental impact? Product ingredient safety? What if you didn’t have to choose one without sacrificing the others? What if you could have it all?

In 2013, Gregg Renfrew launched Beautycounter, a Santa Monica based company whose mission is to get safer products into the hands of everyone.

Beautycounter takes product ingredient safety very seriously. Our clean promise is evidenced through the five pillars of our ingredient selection process.

1: Ban intentionally. Currently, only 38 ingredients are banned from personal care products and cosmetics in the United States. Canadian regulations are stricter, as 600 ingredients are restricted from being used in these same goods. As our product use can affect our health, this is not good enough. Beautycounter has created our Never List, which contains over 1500 known harmful ingredients that are intentionally banned from every product we create.

2: Screen rigourously. Raw ingredients are tested as well as our finished consumer products. Every ingredient is screened and assessed against over 20 safety endpoints, including skin sensitivities, reproductive concerns and increased cancer causing potential.

3: Learn constantly. We have partnered with leading scientists, academic institutions, such as Tufts University and other like-minded businesses to continually source safe ingredients. Our research team works to discover new, safe preservatives and ways to keep your Beautycounter product as safe and effective from the first application to the last drop.

4: Source responsibly. Where we get our ingredients is just as important as what we use. When possible, we choose organic, sustainable, natural and synthetic ingredients that meet our strict standards. We expect our suppliers to adhere to these high standards as well as maintain safe working conditions, fair labour practices and respect for workers. Our Beautycounter Quality team goes on site to inspect the equipment in our manufacturing plants. One aspect of their job is also to ensure the facilities are kept sanitized and functioning properly.

5: Share transparently. Each component of every product, including any fragrance compounds, can be found on our website, www.beautycounter.com. Our fragrances are formulated using plant extracts and essential oils. Our transparency doesn’t end with our products. We work tirelessly to reduce our carbon footprint through our packaging. We use only FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) Certified paper for all of our packaging.

December 4, 2019 was a landmark day as Gregg Renfrew was invited to testify as an expert witness before the House Committee on Energy and Commerce for the cosmetic reform. Our consultants take our mission to Capitol Hill and Parliament every year demanding stricter laws and regulations for the beauty industry. In six short years, we have become one of the top clean beauty brands in North America. We are Leaping Bunny Certified, a Certified B Corporation and have achieved the highest score two years in a row among companies tested in the Chemical Footprint Project, which verifies our work with low-hazard chemicals and ingredients.

Beautycounter’s pedigree doesn’t stop with our ingredient safety achievements. Since our inception in 2013, our high-performing products have been winning awards in the beauty industry by such notable names as Allure, Vogue, Elle, Women’s Wear Daily, Refinery 29 and Chatelaine to name a few. Christy Coleman, our Chief Artistic Officer and makeup artist to some of Hollywood’s top names, has helped develop many of our cosmetics to ensure they meet her color payoff and ease of application standards. A few celebrities who have been spotted singing the praises of their Beautycounter products include Amy Schumer, Meghan Markle and Connie Britton.

When we say safer products for everyone, we mean everyone. We have unscented products for the babies that help make touch time wonderful. Our children’s collection cleans their delicate skin and hair without stripping away the natural protective oils. What about the guys? Yes, we have safe products for them too. Our Counterman line harnesses the power of Sequoia Stem Cell Complex, an antioxidant that helps protect the skin while reducing the appearance of pores and even out skin tone.

My own discovery of Beautycounter came on the heels of a food and wellness journey. Shifting my mindset, I now think of my body as my supercar retirement investment and I pay into it daily. Quality food, adequate rest and daily movement are only part of the equation. You wouldn’t put sugar in your gas tank because that would damage the engine and run up costly repairs. You find the best fuel you can afford. Would you wash your car with brake fluid? Of course not, you would damage the paint and the metal underneath. I applied the same scrutiny to my skincare and makeup that I use for my food and the rest is history.

Not only has Beautycounter revolutionized the clean beauty industry, we also empower women and men of all ages to create their own home-based businesses while educating the public about our safer products. If you think we are just selling lipstick, you haven’t been paying attention.

“The entire beauty industry has been built on secrets and we are trying to undo that”
