We had the pleasure of interviewing Caroline & Marilou:, founders of Rosy and Earnest. They are as lovely as the gorgeous perfumes they have created. Luxury scents that are not only responsible, deliciously delightful and healthy, Rosy & Earnest are also Silver winners of the esteemed Global Green Beauty Awards.
BAHM: What drew you to the perfume industry?
C&M: wo things: our absolute love for perfume and the fact that the fragrance industry is so behind in terms of transparency – to us the fact that fragrance ingredients can still be kept secret in 2024 is unconceivable – and we wanted to make a positive impact and participate in driving change in the industry by offering fully transparent alternatives with worry-free ingredients for your health.
BAHM: From where did you derive your passion and inspiration regarding perfume?
C&M: We have always been fascinated by the power of scent and how it can evoke memories and emotions or make you feel confident, sexy or grounded for example.
Our flagship scents, Be Rosy and Be Earnest epitomize the Rosy & Earnest brand: joyful, lighthearted, yet grounding perfumes. Be Rosy is an ode to La vie en rose: It is a poetic, colourful, as well as hopeful scent that includes fresh clementine and crystalline floral notes. Be Earnest encapsulates the authenticity of Earnest; Its woody notes paired with the crisp apple and rhubarb make it grounding and sensual whilst still being fresh.
We have also just launched two delectable gourmand scents, Vanilla Rum Royal and Pistachio Delight. Vanilla Rum Royal is intoxicating and seductive, whilst Pistachio Delight is a mouth-watering scent that is comforting, playful and flirtatious all at once.
BAHM: You worked with the Queen of Perfume Nathalie Feisthauer and award-winning Master Perfumer. Tell us about that collaboration.
C&M: Working with Nathalie Feisthauer and her team at Labscent is amazing. Not only are they masters at what they do, but they are wonderful partners. They were behind us from the perfume creation to the EWG verification process, which is very strict and challenging. Nathalie is an incredibly talented perfumer, and she grasped the essence of our brand very quickly and created such exquisite scents for us, each with a distinctive oomph – It is no wonder she has won so many industry accolades for her work.
BAHM: We notice that your perfumes are cruelty-free and responsible. We love that. Tell us more about the clean ingredients and why it is important to you for your perfume’s consumers.
C&M: Yes, we are very proud about the fact that our fragrances are EWG Verified, which means that they are free of chemicals of concern, meet the strictest standards for your health and offer 100% ingredient transparency. It was important for us to have a credible, independent third-party certification to validate our claims since there is, unfortunately, so much greenwashing and cleanwashing in the industry. We only use safe synthetics and safe botanical ingredients, and our formulations are free from phthalates, parabens, known carcinogens, known hormone disruptors, and animal products.
Getting the EWG Verified certification was not easy, and we were only the second eau de parfum brand worldwide to get this mark, which we greatly value. Our goal is to provide consumers with peace of mind when purchasing our fragrances. We also use minimalistic recyclable packaging in order to minimize our footprint as much as possible.
BAHM: What are your greatest moments or achievements within the industry?
C&M: It is extremely rewarding to see our vision come to life and create a brand aligned with our values. But the most rewarding has been the support and recognition we have received since our launch, a little more than one year ago. We were so honored to receive four awards in our first year, including the Consider Beyond Global Conscious Brand Award (2024), the Global Green Beauty Awards Best Ethical Fragrance (2023) and the Perfumista Award Best Industry Initiative (2023). We are also proud to have been featured in several media outlets, including Forbes, but most of all, the incredible feedback we have received from our clients makes this journey so rewarding and worthwhile. We believe that we have succeeded in showing that perfume without compromise is possible! And it is just the beginning!
BAHM: Where do you see your brand going in the next five years?
C&M: Our vision includes establishing a presence in curated retail outlets, expanding our reach to a broader audience, and raising awareness about our commitment to offering 100% transparent, luxurious, clean fragrances with third-party certification. We also plan to continue expanding the line.
BAHM: How would you describe perfume in regard to life?
C&M: Perfume can be seen as a beautiful metaphor for life – complex, multifaceted, and capable of bringing joy and enhancing our experiences in a meaningful way. Just as life combines different experiences, emotions, and memories, perfume is a blend of various notes and scents that come together to create a unique and captivating fragrance.
